PhD students are admitted either as Direct Entry if they hold a Bachelor's degree or Advanced Entry students if they hold a Masters degree. Direct Entry students in the PhD degree program must complete a minimum of 96 units of course work and a minimum of 48 units of thesis research; Advanced Entry students must complete a minimum of 48 units of course work and a minimum of 48 units of thesis research.

‘Chemical Engineering Thesis Award’ is one such initiative aiming to inspire the students to work as an active individual or team member, encourage to write high quality scientific/technical reports and make them competent to present their findings to the large scientific community. Early of this year the Department of Chemical Engineering has successfully organised the first Chemical Engineering Thesis Award (2010). The program was sponsored by the Bangladesh Chemical Engineering Forum (BCEF); ChemicalBUET, a forum of the students, academics and alumni of BUET ChE, provided the technical assistance through-out the program.
