essay assignment critical theory in literature

You cannot just assume that the reader knows exactly which part of the work, which argument, which symbols, etc. you are writing about. It is best to spend a bit of time reminding the reader about the main points of the original work. This section should explain the author's presentation of the subject that will be evaluated. This part of the paper should not be very long. Good papers leave this section brief and spend most of the time on analysis. If you are critiquing the author's argument, you need to include the author's conclusion, supporting ideas, implied ideas, and assumptions. However, if you are analyzing the author's method of writing, (i.e. his/her use of literary devices, imagery, development of a specific character, structural choices, etc.), you only need to mention the one aspect of his/her work you are discussing.

The oral examination, which is open to all members of the academic community, is normally a defense of the thesis or major project, but may be extended to test the student's general competence in literary studies.

The oral examination begins with an opening statement from the candidate of approximately ten minutes outlining the main argument of the thesis or the goals and achievements of the major project and addressing any issues s/he feels may be necessary. There follows two rounds of questioning: the first round is ten minutes per member of the Examination Committee. There is a second round of questioning of five minutes per member. The Chair will be responsible for monitoring the time and informing the members of the Examination Committee when their time has elapsed. The exam is normally one hour and should not exceed two hours in duration.

In the case of an unsuccessful defense of an MA thesis or major project the Graduate Chair will write a detailed report outlining problems with the thesis or major project and recommending a timeline for a second attempt at defense. Normally the second attempt should occur within three months of the first defense.

Students working on a critical thesis or creative major project will work in consultation with their chosen Advisor until such time as the Advisor strikes an Examining Committee for the thesis or major project. An Advisory Committee is not normally required, and the Examining Committee need not be struck until the thesis or major project is ready for defense.

Deadline dates for thesis submission are published in the current University of Manitoba Graduate Calendar.

Each student must consult with his/her advisor to determine the date of oral defense and ensure adequate time for the readers. The Department of English, Film, and Theatre Graduate Program Assistant should be advised as soon as possible of possible defense dates.

In addition to the digital submission of an MA thesis on MSpace, the candidate must submit two bound copies to the Department of English, Film, and Theatre (instructions on binding format to be obtained from the Department of English, Film, and Theatre Graduate Office). In the case of the Creative Major Project two bound copies must be submitted to thte Department of English, Film, and Theatre. Students convocating in October do not need to re-register; all others must register in GRAD7000 Master's Thesis in September for any later convocation after the first year of registration.

The maximum time allowed for the completion of the MA requirements is four years.

c) A scholarly and/or critical thesis (approximately 100 pp) approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Creative Writing at Kingston offers opportunities to engage in research leading to Doctor of Philosophy degrees, or Masters by Research.

A creative writing PhD will allow you to combine an extended piece of your own poetry, fiction or life writing with analytical research. Your critical analysis will offer a study of a conceptual or theoretical debate that arises from your creative writing project. You could, for example, consider your own writing in relation to other texts in the same form or genre, within the particular cultural/social framework that produced them. Or, you may wish to pursue a particular strand of theoretical or historical research in relation to your writing, or to investigate an issue raised by your writing from a particular theoretical perspective. You may also find that your critical thesis crosses discipline boundaries, and we would encourage this.

The critical commentary element of the PhD will constitute around 20 per cent of your project, while 80 per cent will be a creative work of publishable standard, such as a novel or collection of stories, a memoir, biography, book of poems or a drama or screenplay. The exact ratio and relationship between the two elements will be decided in conjunction with your supervisor.
