This dissertation is dedicated to the friendship and memory ofJill Huntley. She was a fellow doctoral candidate at Columbia whoencouraged me in this study and, over a number of years, she and herhusband, Eugene McDowell, facilitated my research by sharing theirWashington home with me when I needed a place to stay in theDistrict. Jill's strength and faith during the last year of herlife gave me a new appreciation for the meaning and importance offriendship. She lived her life well, acting upon her spiritualbeliefs conscientiously by assisting both friends and strangers inneed. She faced her too early death bravely. During her terminalillness she managed to complete her dissertation. Her example keptme working when I wanted to give up.
Usually it’s up to you to decide whom and how many people you are going to mention in your dedication thesis page, but the general requirement presupposes moderate restriction upon the categories of the “thanked”. You cannot honour everyone in the world; on the contrary, it is utterly impolite not to thank anyone at all. Try to find the golden mean in the matter, selecting the most obvious, notable and significant contribution from your closest surrounding. Do not invent any imaginable contributors to add weight to your paper; you can find the people to thank around you, just look properly.
